circuit took place on the 3rd and 4th June 2011 at De Montfort University. The evening of the 3rd saw 12 amazingly diverse, highly enjoyable and questioning performances and installations. From one-to-ones, durational, Live Art, to works drawing on influences from proscenium arch traditions and contemporary dance, the platform represented some of the new and exciting ways in which practitioners are engaging in ideas of identity, new technologies, socio-political practice, and audience participation; sometimes reaching the very boundaries of what constitutes performance. It was an intense event and the audience packed into the spaces, large and small, offering a great opportunity for the artists to try out new pieces or invoke responses on developed works which were received extremely well.

On Saturday the artists were given feedback on their works from the speakers who hailed from a variety of perspectives from programmers, arts organisations, and independent consultants to other more experienced artists. This was followed by an afternoon of presentations by the speakers which was most informative for all in attendance offering key practical information about how to get work out there!

Since circuit, the artists have stayed in touch and some are embarking on projects together, sharing information and there are signs of new opportunities directly as a result of their participation. I was thrilled to be the instigator of the first circuit, bringing together artists who live in the region but didn’t know each other or their work, as well as connecting them up with organisations and individuals who generously offered their knowledge. Links have made across previously distinct boundaries – the purpose of circuit.

De Montfort University supports new practitioners through its teaching, encouraging the development of experimental practice, and it was delighted to host this initiative. I hope it will become the first of many.
